Best RIDGID Sewer Locators: NaviTrack Scout and SeekTech SR-20 Compared

RIDGID NaviTrack Scout vs SeekTech SR-20: frequencies, sonde and line-trace modes, depth readout and who each receiver is for. Verified specifications compared, plus which sonde cameras they pair with.

RIDGID sells two receivers that a plumber or drain contractor is likely to choose between, and they are built for different jobs. The NaviTrack Scout is a sonde-first locator: a multi-directional receiver designed to find the 512 Hz transmitter in a camera head quickly and from any approach angle, with line tracing as a secondary mode. The SeekTech SR-20 is a utility-first locator: a broad-frequency, user-programmable receiver with current measurement and passive modes, built for tracing buried lines through congested corridors, that also locates sondes well. Neither transmits anything. Both need a signal source, and for a sewer camera that source is the sonde in the head.

This guide compares the two receivers from their published specifications, then ranks the verified sonde-equipped cameras they pair with, because a receiver is only half a locating system. Figures are taken from manufacturer documentation and compared editorially; no hands-on testing is claimed. Full specification pages: RIDGID NaviTrack Scout and RIDGID SeekTech SR-20.

Who should buy it

Plumbers and serious homeowners who want one reel that handles pipes larger than 1.5 in and leaves the door open to locating a fault later.

Skip it if

Locator receiver is not included in this variant.

Pros

  • Self-leveling head keeps the picture upright, which makes footage far easier to read back to a customer
  • 10 in AHD 1080P IPS monitor is the largest and sharpest verified here, and it shows on a debris-filled wall
  • Built-in 512 Hz sonde means you can locate a fault later without buying a different reel
  • Distance counter, audio recording and USB keyboard support make a clip usable as evidence rather than just a look

Limitations

  • No locator receiver in this variant, Sanyipace sells a separate 100 ft listing that includes one
  • 7 mm pushrod is stiff enough for a straight lateral but fights tight double bends
  • Self-leveling adds a little bulk versus a fixed head of the same diameter

The Scout, catalogue 19238, uses an omnidirectional multi-antenna array so it does not have to be held at a precise orientation to the pipe. Its display guides you over the sonde with approach markers and a signal count that peaks directly above the target, and it computes depth once positioned. Sonde frequencies are 512 Hz, 640 Hz, 874 Hz and 33 kHz. Active line-trace frequencies are 128 Hz, 8 kHz and 33 kHz, with passive 50 and 60 Hz power detection. It is the receiver a drain contractor buys to find a camera head fast and mark a dig, and its strength is that null readings and false peaks from bad orientation, the classic beginner problem, largely go away. Read why can’t my locator find the sonde for what those problems look like on a conventional wand.

SeekTech SR-20: what it is for

The SR-20, catalogue 21893, also uses an omnidirectional antenna cluster but adds a real-time mapping display: a guideline shows the line’s direction, arrows steer you to its centre, and a proximity number peaks over it. In line-trace mode it measures current in milliamps, which is how you confirm you are following the intended pipe and not signal bleeding onto a neighbouring one. Sonde frequencies match the Scout. Active line frequencies run 128 Hz, 1 kHz, 8 kHz, 33 kHz, 93 kHz and 262 kHz, with user-programmable frequencies from 10 Hz to 35 kHz and passive radio and power modes. It is the receiver a utility locator or municipal crew buys because it does everything, and it locates a sewer sonde as well as the Scout does. See multi-frequency sewer locators explained.

Which receiver for which buyer

If your locating is sewer cameras, buy the Scout. It is designed around the sonde, it is faster to learn, and the extra frequencies on the SR-20 are for work you do not do. If your locating includes gas, water, electric and tracer wire as well as sewer, buy the SR-20; its current readout and programmable frequencies pay for themselves the first time you have to sort out a crowded easement. If you already own one of them, the other is rarely worth adding. Both read 512 Hz, which is the frequency every verified sonde camera on this site transmits, so compatibility with your camera is not the deciding factor. Read frequency match vs OEM locator pairing.

The cameras that give them something to find

A RIDGID receiver will locate any 512 Hz sonde, RIDGID or not. The natural pairings are RIDGID’s own reels: the SeeSnake Mini TruSense 200 ft for laterals and mains, the microDRAIN APX 65 ft for small lines, and the microREEL system with the CA-350 monitor as a complete 100 ft diagnostic package, all with built-in 512 Hz sondes. But a consumer camera with a 512 Hz sonde, such as the Sanyipace S850 100 ft, will be found by a Scout or SR-20 just as readily, and for a homeowner or small contractor that combination is far cheaper than an all-RIDGID kit. The ranking below is ordered by how often each camera is likely to be paired with a RIDGID receiver, not by camera quality alone.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not buy either receiver expecting it to find a pipe with no sonde in it. Plastic pipe with no tracer wire is invisible to both unless a transmitter is inside. Do not trust a depth reading near a manhole, a cast iron cleanout or reinforced concrete; metal distorts the field. Take two locates from different approaches before you paint. And confirm the sonde is actually transmitting before you walk the lawn; testing a 512 Hz sonde above ground takes a minute and saves an hour.

Using either receiver on a sewer locate

Push the camera to the defect and leave it there with the sonde active. Walk the receiver in a wide circle around the expected position until the signal appears, then follow the guidance markers toward the peak. Both receivers show the sonde’s two null points, one ahead of and one behind the head, and the peak between them; the peak is the head, and the line through the nulls is the pipe’s direction. Read the depth only when centred over the peak with the receiver held vertically and still. Move a few feet along the line and repeat, because two locates that agree are a mark you can dig on and one locate is a guess. Then withdraw the camera a measured distance and locate again to confirm the direction. On plastic pipe this is the whole locate; on cast iron, both receivers can also trace the line itself in line mode if you connect a transmitter, which is where the SR-20’s current readout starts to earn its price.

The other RIDGID transmitters

For lines with no camera in them, RIDGID sells the Remote Transmitter 512 and the SeeSnake inline sonde, both of which either receiver will find.

Common questions

Will a NaviTrack Scout find a VEVOR or Sanyipace camera?

If the camera has a 512 Hz sonde, yes. Frequency is what matters, not brand.

Is the SR-20 better than the Scout for sewer work?

Not meaningfully. It is better for utility tracing. For sonde locating they are comparable.

Do I need a transmitter as well?

For a sewer camera, no; the sonde in the head is the transmitter. For tracing a metallic line, yes, a separate line transmitter.

See sewer line locators, the best sewer cameras with a 512 Hz locator, and 512 Hz vs 33 kHz.

Final Verdict

For most buyers, RIDGID 63628 SeeSnake Mini TruSense 200 ft Self-Leveling Camera Reel (30 mm Head) is the best choice in this guide (Best Overall).

A commercial-grade 200 ft heavy-duty inspection push reel equipped with a 30 mm true mechanical self-leveling camera head, TruSense HDR sensor, TiltSense on-screen inclinometer, and 512 Hz sonde. Requires an external SeeSnake CSx monitor or CSx Via Wi-Fi hub.

No single sewer camera suits every job. The right choice depends mainly on the smallest pipe diameter you inspect, the run length you need to reach, and whether you need to locate faults from the surface.
