How We Evaluate Inspection Equipment

Where our information comes from

Every assessment on this site is built from documentary sources:

  • Manufacturer specification tables as published on the product listing.
  • User manuals and product documentation, which frequently contain dimensions and capabilities the listing omits.
  • Parts and accessory catalogs, which tell us whether a system is serviceable.
  • Listing data for configuration variants sold under the same product name.

We record the sources consulted for each product and the date the specifications were last verified.

How a guide is made

A reader can reasonably ask how a site with no workshop arrives at a recommendation. This is the full sequence, including where automation is involved.

1. Candidate selection

A product enters consideration when it is currently sold in the US, covers a use case our guides address, and publishes enough specification detail to be assessed. Availability alone is not a reason to include something, and we would rather run a guide with four products than pad it to seven.

2. Configuration lock

Each candidate is tied to one exact ASIN or product configuration before anything is written about it. Product families ship variants that differ on camera head diameter, sonde and receiver — the specifications our recommendations turn on — so a record identified only by brand and cable length is treated as unverified.

3. Cross-checking

Specifications are read from the Amazon listing and from the manufacturer product page, and compared. Where the two disagree, or where a figure is absent, the field is recorded as not stated rather than filled in from a sibling variant. Both source URLs are stored with the record and shown on the page.

4. Scoring

The PipeScope Editorial Score is applied to the verified specifications using a fixed weighting, and each sub-score carries a one-line reason citing the specification it rests on. Products that share the specification a criterion measures must share that sub-score; an automated check fails the build if they do not.

5. Writing and AI use

Drafting, structuring and editing are done with AI assistance. Every factual claim in a draft is then checked back against the stored sources by a person before publication, and any claim that cannot be traced to a source is cut rather than softened. AI is not used to generate specifications, scores, product recommendations or the appearance of hands-on experience.

6. Verification and dating

A record is marked verified only once a person has read its exact listing. The date appears on the product card, and where a record has not yet been checked the card says so rather than staying silent. Hands-on testing is claimed only where it has actually been done — at present, nowhere on this site.

The short version: the specifications and the sourcing are the work, the writing is assisted, and nothing is published as verified until a person has read the listing it came from.

What we do not do

These are commitments, not aspirations. Each one is a practice common in affiliate publishing that we have chosen not to adopt.

We identify products by configuration, not by brand and size

A product family is not a product. “A 100 ft sewer camera” from one brand can ship with a 512 Hz sonde or without one, with a locator receiver or with only the transmitter — the exact specifications our recommendations turn on. We therefore tie each recommendation to one specific configuration rather than to a brand and a cable length. Until a record has been matched to a specific listing and its specification table read, the product card on the page says so in plain terms.

We do not fabricate testing

If we have not physically used a product, we do not describe it as tested. Our assessments are built from manufacturer specifications, product documentation and listing data.

We do not republish customer reviews

We do not copy, quote or summarize Amazon customer reviews as if they were our own findings, and we do not display star ratings sourced from Amazon.

We do not display prices

Amazon prices change constantly. Rather than showing a number that is wrong within hours, we link you to the live listing and organize guides by budget bracket instead.

We disclose affiliate relationships

Rankings and commercial incentive

We earn nothing from any recommendation on this site, so no commercial incentive can influence a ranking. Product ordering within a guide reflects our assessment of fit for the stated use case, and nothing else.

We date and re-verify our pages

Each guide shows when it was last reviewed. Specifications are re-checked against live listings on that cadence, and material changes are logged under our corrections policy.

The PipeScope Editorial Score

Our editorial score is a weighted assessment out of 100 across eight criteria. It is not an Amazon star rating, not an average of customer reviews, and not the result of durability testing.

The weights reflect what determines whether a camera does the job:

  • Pipe Compatibility — 20 points. Which pipe diameters the camera head and cable can realistically service, and how well it handles bends and transitions.
  • Camera & Visibility — 15 points. Camera head size, sensor resolution, lighting output and whether the image stays usable in wet, dark or debris-filled lines.
  • Cable & Reach — 15 points. Usable cable length, pushrod stiffness and how much of that rated reach is achievable in a real lateral.
  • Locating Capability — 15 points. Presence and frequency of a built-in sonde, whether a compatible locator is included, and how the two work together.
  • Inspection Features — 10 points. Self-leveling, meter/footage counter, on-screen text, zoom and other features that make a report usable.
  • Recording — 10 points. Video and still capture, storage format, export options and whether footage can be shared with a customer.
  • Support / Serviceability — 5 points. Warranty terms, parts availability and whether the camera head or cable can be replaced instead of binning the unit.
  • Value — 10 points. What the system delivers relative to comparable options in the same bracket.

Pipe compatibility carries the most weight because it is the only criterion that can make a camera unusable rather than merely disappointing. Support and serviceability carries the least in absolute terms, but it dominates cost of ownership for professional buyers — which is why our professional guides discuss it far more than the weighting alone would suggest.

How we handle uncertainty

Specification data in this category is inconsistent. Where we encounter a problem, we handle it as follows:

  • Sources disagree: we state that they disagree instead of choosing one silently.
  • A specification is missing: we say it is not published instead of estimating.
  • A product ships in several configurations: we name the configuration we assessed.
  • We do not know: we say so. “We do not have data on this” is a legitimate answer and appears in several of our guides.

Why we do not use Review schema

Structured data markup for reviews and aggregate ratings exists to communicate first-party ratings to search engines. We do not hold first-party ratings derived from hands-on testing, so emitting that markup would be fabricated data.

We publish Organization, WebSite, Article, BreadcrumbList and FAQPage structured data, all of which accurately describe what is on the page.

Re-verification

Each guide shows when it was last reviewed. On that cadence we re-check specifications against live listings, confirm that linked products are still available in the configuration we assessed, and update or withdraw recommendations that no longer hold.
