If you look at the full-size reels on this site, nearly all of them share one number: a 23 mm camera head. That is not an accident. At 0.9 in, a 23 mm head passes a 2 in fitting, sits comfortably in a 3 or 4 in lateral, and has room for twelve LEDs, a self-leveling mechanism and a 512 Hz sonde. It is the size that makes a general-purpose residential reel possible. So the question is not whether to buy 23 mm, it is which 23 mm system, and that comes down to everything except the head.
This ranking compares the verified 23 mm systems on the features that actually differ between them. Figures are taken from manufacturer listings and compared editorially; no hands-on testing is claimed.

What a 23 mm head can and cannot do
It can inspect any 2 to 6 in line from a cleanout, pass a long-sweep 2 in elbow, and light a 4 in wall properly. What it cannot do is go through a 1.5 in trap, and it usually cannot make a tight 2 in trap either. The published VEVOR figures put the right-angle minimum for their 23 mm heads at roughly 2 in of clean bore; Holdwell and Sanyipace publish similar figures for 90 degree bends. For anything smaller, you need a 17 mm scope. Our guide on 23 mm vs 25 mm camera heads covers the next size up, which some budget reels use and which gives up the 2 in capability.
The features that separate 23 mm systems
Self-leveling. The biggest single difference. A self-leveling 23 mm head keeps the picture upright; a fixed one rolls. Every system here self-levels except the VEVOR 165 ft locator bundle. See self-leveling camera heads explained.
Sonde and receiver. All five carry a 512 Hz sonde. Three ship with a receiver. Two are sonde-only, for buyers who own a receiver or will add one.
Rod diameter. The Sanyipace and VEVOR WP9612FT reels run 7 mm rods with more push in a straight line. The Holdwell 100 ft kit runs 5 mm, which is easier round a 2 in bend but has less column strength. Read push cable diameter explained.
Screen. The Sanyipace S850 reels use a 10 in 1080P IPS panel. Holdwell and the VEVOR WP9612FT use 9 in 1080P. The VEVOR 165 ft bundle uses 9 in 720P.
Distance counter. On screen for Sanyipace, Holdwell and the WP9612FT; cable markings only on the VEVOR 165 ft bundle.
How the ranking was decided
The Sanyipace S850DSTKM 100 ft self-leveling reel wins because it stacks the most features on a 23 mm head of anything verified here: self-leveling, fitted sonde, on-screen counter, audio recording, USB keyboard input and a 10 in 1080P screen, at a residential cable length. The receiver is not included, which is why the same reel’s locator bundle sits at number two for buyers who want it complete.
The Holdwell 100 ft kit is the value locating pick. It self-levels, counts on screen, ships with a receiver, and its thinner 5 mm rod is a genuine advantage in older 2 in branch lines. The VEVOR 165 ft locator bundle is the budget long-reach option: 23 mm head, 165 ft, receiver in the box, at the lowest price of the locating kits here, with a fixed head and 720P screen as the trade. The VEVOR WP9612FT 165 ft closes the list as a self-leveling sonde-only reel with fully published straight and right-angle pipe ranges.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not assume a 23 mm head means a specific pipe range. The head is the same size across these brands but the rod, the spring behind the head and the published bend figures differ. Check the product page. Do not buy a 23 mm reel for a 1.5 in line either; that is what the small scopes are for. And do not judge two 23 mm systems by cable length alone. A 100 ft reel with a self-leveling head and a counter is more useful on most residential jobs than a 165 ft reel without them. See why longer cable is not always better.
Which 23 mm system for which buyer
A homeowner with one house and a recurring problem is best served by the Sanyipace 100 ft reel without the receiver: the picture is the sharpest here, the counter gives a distance to quote, and the sonde is fitted if a contractor with a receiver ever needs to find the fault. A home inspector or handyperson who will be asked where the problem is should buy a kit with the receiver, and the Holdwell 100 ft is the cheaper of the two self-leveling options that include one. A plumber on rural or large-lot work needs 165 ft, and the choice is between the VEVOR locator bundle, which is cheapest and fixed-head, and the VEVOR WP9612FT, which self-levels and counts on screen but needs a receiver you already own. Checking a 23 mm listing before you order
Confirm three things on the live listing: that the head is stated as self-leveling if you want it, that a 512 Hz sonde is stated, and whether the receiver is in the box. Brands sell several variants at the same cable length with near-identical titles, and the product pages on this site record which configuration was verified and when.
Common questions
What pipe sizes does a 23 mm head fit?
Straight runs from about 1.5 in up. Right-angle fittings and 90 degree bends from about 2 in, per the published figures on these listings.
Are all 23 mm heads self-leveling?
No. VEVOR and Sanyipace both sell fixed and self-leveling 23 mm variants. Check the specification.
Do all 23 mm heads have a sonde?
All five here do. Some budget 23 mm reels do not, so check.

Final Verdict
For most buyers, Sanyipace S850DSTKM 100 ft Self-Leveling Sewer Camera is the best choice in this guide (Best Overall).
The most complete configuration verified here: a self-leveling 23 mm head, a 512 Hz sonde already fitted, and a 10 in 1080P screen. If you are buying your first serious sewer camera and want to avoid re-buying in a year, this is the configuration to start from.
No single sewer camera suits every job. The right choice depends mainly on the smallest pipe diameter you inspect, the run length you need to reach, and whether you need to locate faults from the surface.
