HDR in a sewer camera solves one specific problem. The head sits a few inches from a pipe wall lit by its own LEDs, and the wall nearest the lens is very bright while the pipe ahead is very dark. A standard sensor exposes for one or the other: the near wall goes white and detail vanishes, or the far pipe goes black and you cannot see where you are going. A high dynamic range sensor captures both in one frame, so the joint beside the head and the bend twenty feet ahead are both readable at once. RIDGID calls its version TruSense, and among systems verified on this site, RIDGID’s TruSense reels are the only ones that carry it.
That makes this a short ranking with an honest scope: two reels, both professional, both sold without a monitor, compared on what they are for. Figures are taken from manufacturer listings and compared editorially; no hands-on testing is claimed.

What HDR changes and what it does not
It changes exposure. With a consumer head you manage the near-far problem by dimming the LEDs and accepting a darker far pipe, or by running them full and accepting a washed-out near wall. Our guide on adjustable LED lighting is essentially a guide to working around the absence of HDR. A TruSense head handles the balance in the sensor, which means the recorded clip shows the whole pipe without the operator riding the brightness control. In a large, light-coloured pipe with a bright near wall, or a pipe that transitions from wet to dry, that is the difference between a clip a customer can read and one they cannot.
It does not change resolution, it does not see through silt, and it does not fix a rolling picture. RIDGID pairs HDR with self-leveling on the Mini TruSense and with Auto-Image Flip on the microDRAIN APX for that reason. And it does not appear on the RIDGID microREEL system in this catalogue, which is a standard-generation reel without TruSense. Read blurry sewer camera video for the problems HDR does not address.
The two HDR reels compared
SeeSnake Mini TruSense, 200 ft. A 30 mm true mechanical self-leveling head with eighteen high-intensity LEDs, an HDR sensor, and a TiltSense inclinometer that shows the camera’s pitch on a CSx monitor. An 8 mm mid-flex rod rated for 1.5 to 8 in lines, 2 to 8 in at bends. A 20 in steel frame rated waterproof to 330 ft, listed at 24.5 lb. A 512 Hz sonde. Lifetime warranty. This is the large-pipe, long-lateral HDR tool.
SeeSnake microDRAIN APX, 65 ft. A 22 mm head with an HDR sensor and Auto-Image Flip, on a high-flex 8.3 mm cable with a published 0.75 in bend radius, rated for 1.25 to 3 in lines and multiple 90 degree bends in 1.5 in drains. A 512 Hz sonde. A compact reel with a kickstand, listed at 11.6 lb. Lifetime warranty. This is the small-line, trap and branch HDR tool.
Both need a SeeSnake CSx monitor or, for the microDRAIN, a micro CA-350 with adapter. Both record through the monitor. See reel vs complete camera system for what that means for the total cost.
How the ranking was decided
The Mini TruSense wins because it uses the HDR sensor where HDR matters most: in large pipe, where the near wall is brightest and the far pipe darkest, with the most LEDs verified and a self-leveling head so the balanced picture is also an upright one. TiltSense adds slope data no consumer system offers. It is heavy, stiff and priced for professional use.
The microDRAIN APX is the small-line pick, and for a plumber whose work is traps and branches it is the better buy. The HDR sensor is the same; the cable is the most flexible verified on this site; the sonde makes small-line faults locatable. It is limited to 65 ft and 3 in pipe by design.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not buy an HDR reel without budgeting for the monitor. A CSx monitor is a separate, significant purchase, and the reel is inert without it. Do not expect HDR to compensate for a dirty lens or silty water. Do not buy the Mini TruSense for 2 in branch lines; its 8 mm rod and 30 mm head are large-pipe tools. And check which RIDGID reel you are looking at: the microREEL system in this catalogue is a fine 100 ft diagnostic tool, but it is not TruSense and has no HDR. Our RIDGID SeeSnake CS6x and CS65x pages cover the monitors these reels pair with.
Pairing an HDR reel with a monitor
The Mini TruSense and microDRAIN APX both connect to RIDGID’s SeeSnake CSx monitors, and the monitor decides what the HDR picture becomes. The CS6x is a compact 5.7 in daylight-viewable monitor that records to a USB drive and streams to a phone over Wi-Fi; the CS6x Versa adds a pivoting kickstand frame. The CS65x adds a 6.5 in panel, an internal 128 GB solid-state drive, dual USB ports, an on-screen keyboard and the same Wi-Fi streaming, which is the reporting station a contractor wants. The CS12x sits above both. TiltSense slope data on the Mini TruSense only appears on a CSx Wi-Fi monitor, and Auto-Image Flip on the microDRAIN also needs a CSx monitor. The microDRAIN can alternatively run on a micro CA-350 handheld with an adapter, at the cost of the HDR-era features. Read sewer camera monitor compatibility before buying either reel.
What HDR looks like in practice
A consumer head in a 6 in concrete pipe shows a white crescent where the near wall is and a black hole where the pipe goes. A TruSense head in the same pipe shows the crescent as grey concrete with visible aggregate and the hole as a pipe with joints receding into the distance. The defect you are looking for, a crack at the springline twenty feet ahead, is visible in the second picture and invisible in the first until the head is on top of it.
Common questions
Which sewer cameras have HDR?
Among verified systems, only RIDGID TruSense heads: the Mini TruSense and the microDRAIN APX.
Is HDR worth it for a homeowner?
No. The reels need a professional monitor and are priced for daily use. A consumer system with dimmable LEDs and a 1080P screen is the right tool.
Does HDR replace self-leveling?
No. They fix different problems. The Mini TruSense has both.

Final Verdict
For most buyers, RIDGID 63628 SeeSnake Mini TruSense 200 ft Self-Leveling Camera Reel (30 mm Head) is the best choice in this guide (Best Overall).
A commercial-grade 200 ft heavy-duty inspection push reel equipped with a 30 mm true mechanical self-leveling camera head, TruSense HDR sensor, TiltSense on-screen inclinometer, and 512 Hz sonde. Requires an external SeeSnake CSx monitor or CSx Via Wi-Fi hub.
No single sewer camera suits every job. The right choice depends mainly on the smallest pipe diameter you inspect, the run length you need to reach, and whether you need to locate faults from the surface.
