Best Sewer Cameras for 1.5-Inch Pipes and Small Drain Lines

A 1.5 in drain is the line most sewer cameras cannot enter. Bathroom sinks, tubs, showers, laundry standpipes and many kitchen branches run 1.5 in, and every one of them starts with a trap. A standard 23 mm camera head is 0.9 in across, which sounds small until you remember that a 1.5 in pipe has an inside diameter closer to 1.4 in and a trap bend far tighter than a right-angle fitting. The head either stops at the trap or wedges in it.

So this list is short by design. It includes only verified systems whose manufacturer publishes a pipe minimum at or under 1.25 in, or whose head and rod are small enough that the published right-angle figure makes a 1.5 in trap plausible. Figures are taken from manufacturer listings and compared editorially; no hands-on testing is claimed.

Why 1.5 in is the hard size

Two things limit a camera in a small line: head diameter and bend radius. Head diameter is the obvious one. A 17 mm head is 0.67 in, leaving room to pass a 1.4 in bore even with some scale. Bend radius is the one people forget. The rod behind the head has to curve through the trap, and a 7 mm fiberglass rod resists curving to a radius that tight. A 5 mm rod does not. That is why every pick here runs a 5 mm rod or thinner, except the RIDGID reel, which uses a purpose-built high-flex 8.3 mm cable rated by RIDGID for a 0.75 in bend radius. Read what minimum bend radius means for the mechanics.

There is a lighting cost to going small. A 17 mm head carries six or eight LEDs where a 23 mm head carries twelve, so the picture in a 1.5 in line is fine but the same head in a 4 in main looks dim. These are small-line tools, not general-purpose reels. Our guide on camera head size vs pipe diameter covers the trade-off.

What to look for

A published pipe minimum of 1.25 in or less. The Sanyipace S8417D and S5517DC both publish 1.0 in. The RIDGID microDRAIN APX publishes 1.25 in with explicit P-trap capability. The VEVOR WP9602B publishes 1.18 in straight and roughly 2 in at a right angle, so it will enter a 1.5 in line but is not guaranteed through the trap.

A rod of 5 mm or less, or a high-flex cable. All four picks meet this.

Enough cable for the run. A bathroom sink line is short. A laundry standpipe that runs across a basement to the stack is not. The 100 ft Sanyipace S8417D is the pick for long runs; the 66 ft scopes are fine for most fixtures.

A microphone, if you report. Both Sanyipace scopes record audio, which is useful for narrating a small-line inspection where there is no distance counter to rely on.

How the ranking was decided

The Sanyipace S8417D wins because it combines the smallest published pipe minimum, 1.0 in, with a 17 mm head, a 4.8 mm rod and a full 100 ft of cable. Nothing else verified here offers that reach at that size. Its screen is a small 4.3 in panel and there is no sonde, and the manufacturer does not publish a bend radius, so trap performance is not guaranteed on paper, but the listing describes it as intended for S-traps and P-traps.

The VEVOR WP9602B is the compact pick: a 17 mm head on a 5 mm semi-rigid rod described by the manufacturer as soft, which is the most forgiving combination here for a trap. It is 66 ft, has six LEDs and no sonde. The Sanyipace S5517DC gives an 18 mm head with the same 1.0 in published minimum, 66 ft, and a detachable 5 in magnetic screen that can sit on the vanity while you work under it.

The RIDGID microDRAIN APX is the professional pick. It is a reel only, needing a SeeSnake CSx monitor or micro CA-350, and it costs many times the others. In return it is the only system here whose maker explicitly rates it for 1.25 in lines and multiple 90 degree bends in 1.5 in drains, it carries a 512 Hz sonde, and it has an HDR sensor and a lifetime warranty. For a plumber who does small-line work daily, that is the tool.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not try a 23 mm head in a 1.5 in trap. It is the most common way to get a camera stuck. Do not push through a trap dry; run water first so the head slides. And do not expect a small scope to inspect the main lateral afterwards. Once the branch joins a 3 or 4 in line, the small head is underlit and the thin rod loses steering. Use it for the branch, then a full reel from a cleanout for the main. See sewer camera sizes explained.

Which small scope for which fixture

For a bathroom sink with a removable trap, the VEVOR WP9602B is enough: take the trap off, enter the trap arm, push to the stack. For a kitchen line that runs the length of the house, or a laundry standpipe crossing a basement, the Sanyipace S8417D’s 100 ft is what reaches the tee. For a tub or shower trap under a finished floor, the Sanyipace S5517DC’s detachable screen lets you watch from the floor while the reel sits on the tub edge. For a plumber who cameras 1.5 in lines every week and has to report where the defect is, the RIDGID microDRAIN’s sonde and published trap rating are the difference between an inspection and a guess. In every case, wet the line first, run the LEDs at half power, and feed the rod by hand from just behind the head so you feel a snag before the rod bows.

Common questions

Can any sewer camera go through a 1.5 in P-trap?

The RIDGID microDRAIN APX is rated for it. The 17 and 18 mm scopes here often can, but their makers do not publish a bend radius, so it is not guaranteed.

Is a 17 mm head good enough for a 4 in main?

It will show you the pipe, but with less light than a 23 mm head. Buy a small scope for small lines, not as a general reel.

Why is there no locator on these?

Small heads have no room for a sonde on consumer models. The RIDGID reel is the exception.

For 2 in branches see the best sewer cameras for 2 in pipe. For the head-size decision, read 17 mm vs 23 mm sewer camera heads.

Final Verdict

For most buyers, Sanyipace 100 ft Compact Sewer Camera (17 mm Head, 4.3 in Screen) is the best choice in this guide (Best Overall).

A compact 17 mm (0.67 in) camera head on a 100 ft (4.8 mm) push cable with a 4.3-inch LCD monitor and microphone audio recording for narrow residential pipe inspections.

Choose instead for technicians inspecting residential branch lines, sinks, floor drains, and cleanouts where 23mm heads are oversizedSanyipace S5517DC 66 ft Compact Drain Camera (18 mm Head, 5 in Screen)

No single sewer camera suits every job. The right choice depends mainly on the smallest pipe diameter you inspect, the run length you need to reach, and whether you need to locate faults from the surface.
