People booking a sewer camera inspection want to know how long to block out, and technicians quoting one want to know how long to allow. The honest answer is a range, because the job depends on things nobody knows until the technician arrives: whether there is a cleanout, whether the line drains, what the pipe is made of, how many defects need a locate and whether the branches need inspecting too. What can be said is what makes an inspection short, what makes it long, and when a short one means it was done badly rather than easily.
Quick answer: a residential lateral inspected from a good exterior cleanout, with the line draining and no major defects, takes about twenty to thirty minutes including setup and recording. Add ten to fifteen minutes for each defect that needs a surface locate, twenty to thirty minutes for each additional entry such as a pulled toilet or the roof vent, and an hour or more if the line has to be cabled or jetted first. An old house with no cleanout, cast iron under a slab and several branches to check is a two to three hour job. A five-minute inspection is not an inspection.
What makes it quick
An exterior two-way cleanout near the foundation, so the camera enters without pulling anything and can go both ways. A draining line, so the camera sees pipe rather than standing sewage. Plastic pipe with few joints, which passes at walking pace. No defects needing a locate. A single question to answer, such as whether a lateral is sound before a sale. Under those conditions the setup, the pass out and back, and the recording take twenty to thirty minutes, and a technician who takes that long has done it properly. The cleanout guide explains why the entry matters so much.
What makes it long
No cleanout. Pulling a toilet and resetting it adds half an hour; entering from the roof adds a ladder and a different set of risks. A blocked line. Cabling first, then inspecting, can double the visit. Old pipe. Clay with a joint every three feet and cast iron with scale are inspected slowly, joint by joint, because that is where the findings are. Locating. Each defect that may need repair gets a surface locate from two approaches, paint and a photograph: ten to fifteen minutes each. Multiple entries. A slab house inspected from the cleanout, the stack base, two toilets and a floor drain is four or five separate inspections. Reporting. Stills, notes and a written finding take time after the camera is out. The under-slab guide shows how a thorough multi-entry inspection is planned.
Typical durations by job
Pre-purchase check of a plastic lateral from a cleanout: thirty minutes. Pre-purchase check of a clay lateral with roots at three joints, located and marked: an hour. Blockage diagnosis with cabling first: an hour to ninety minutes. Old house with no cleanout, cast iron under the floor, three entries and locates: two to three hours. Commercial building drain with several floor sinks and a grease line: half a day. Municipal lateral programme per house: often scheduled at thirty to forty-five minutes with the entry prepared in advance. What a professional inspection includes lists the steps that make up those times.
When short means rushed
A technician who is in and out in ten minutes has pushed to the first problem and stopped. They have not run the full line, slowed at the joints, recorded the whole pass or located anything. The report will say “roots at 40 ft” and the customer will not know whether there are roots at 60 ft too, or whether the joint at 40 ft is cracked or merely leaking. A short inspection is only acceptable when the line is short, plastic, draining and sound from end to end, and even then the recording should show the whole length. Why some inspections miss problems covers what gets skipped.
Scheduling it
Book the inspection when the line can be used freely beforehand and left alone during; a camera in the lateral while the washing machine drains is a camera in a wave. Tell the technician in advance whether there is a cleanout, whether the line is draining, the house’s age and what prompted the call, so they bring the right heads and allow the right time. Be present for the pass, because watching the screen is the fastest way to understand the report. Scheduling an inspection covers the timing in more detail.
For technicians quoting the job
Quote by entry and condition rather than a flat time: a base for a cleanout entry on a draining line, an addition for each extra entry, an addition for cabling, and an addition per locate. Tell the customer the range and what moves it. A customer who understands why an old slab house takes three hours does not resent the three hours; one who was told “about twenty minutes” and watched it become three hours does. Pricing sewer camera inspections covers the models.
Common questions
How long does a sewer scope take for a home purchase?
Thirty minutes to an hour for most houses, longer for an old house with no cleanout or a line that needs cleaning first.
Why did my inspection take three hours?
Multiple entries, a blocked line, old pipe inspected joint by joint, or several locates. Each is time well spent; ask which it was.
Is a ten-minute inspection ever enough?
Only for a short, sound plastic lateral from a good cleanout, and even then the recording should show the whole line.
