Best 17mm Sewer Cameras for Tight Bends and Small Pipes

17 mm is the smallest common sewer camera head. Verified 17 mm and 18 mm systems compared on rod diameter, cable length, screen and price, ranked for tight bends and small pipes.

A 17 mm camera head is 0.67 in across, and that number is the whole reason it exists. It passes a 1.5 in trap that a 23 mm head cannot, it follows a tight galvanized elbow, and it goes down a 2 in branch from a floor drain without argument. The price of that access is light and reach: a 17 mm head carries fewer LEDs, and the thin rod it rides on has less column strength than the 7 mm rod on a full-size reel. Every 17 mm system is a specialist tool, and the question is which specialist you need.

This ranking compares the three verified 17 and 18 mm systems in stock at the time of writing. Two others that were once listed here are currently unavailable and have been left out. Figures are taken from manufacturer listings and compared editorially; no hands-on testing is claimed.

What a 17 mm head is for

Bathroom branch lines, kitchen lines, laundry standpipes, floor drains, tub and shower traps, and the older 2 in galvanized branches that have narrowed with rust. Also small commercial fixtures, condensate drains and some pool and irrigation lines. What it is not for is the 4 in main lateral, where a 23 mm head with twelve LEDs gives a far better picture and a sonde for locating. Read 17 mm vs 23 mm camera head for the full comparison.

The three systems here differ mainly in three things: how long the cable is, how the screen is arranged, and how soft the rod is. Head size is nearly identical.

What to compare between 17 mm systems

Cable length. 66 ft covers most fixture branches. 100 ft covers a laundry line that crosses a basement to the stack, or a long kitchen run in a large house. The Sanyipace S8417D is the 100 ft option here.

Rod diameter and stiffness. The VEVOR WP9602B runs a 5 mm rod the manufacturer calls semi-rigid and this site classifies as soft. The Sanyipace S8417D runs 4.8 mm, also soft. The S5517DC runs 5 mm. All three will follow a trap; none will push 100 ft through a bellied main.

Screen. The WP9602B and S8417D use 4.3 in panels mounted on the reel. The S5517DC uses a 5 in IPS panel on a magnetic mount that detaches, which is the difference between watching the screen at the reel and sticking it to the side of a washing machine while you push from the floor.

Audio. Both Sanyipace scopes have a microphone and speaker for spoken notes during recording. The VEVOR does not.

Published pipe range. Sanyipace publishes 1.0 to 3.0 in for the S8417D and 1.0 to 4.0 in for the S5517DC. VEVOR publishes 1.18 to 3.93 in straight and 1.97 to 3.93 in at a right angle for the WP9602B. See manufacturer pipe range vs head size for how to read those figures.

How the ranking was decided

The Sanyipace S8417D wins because it is the only 17 mm system verified here with a full 100 ft of cable, and it adds audio recording and a published 1.0 in minimum. It is the 17 mm scope that handles the widest range of small-line jobs. Its weaknesses are a small 4.3 in screen, no sonde, no counter and no published bend radius.

The VEVOR WP9602B is the budget pick. It is the lowest-priced 17 mm system here, its 5 mm rod is the softest, and it is light enough to use one-handed under a sink. It has six LEDs, a 4.3 in screen and 66 ft. For a homeowner with one or two small-line problems, it is enough. The Sanyipace S5517DC is the 18 mm alternative: one millimetre wider, which will not matter in any 1.5 in line, with a much better detachable screen and a 1.0 to 4.0 in published range that makes it the most useful of the three in a 3 or 4 in line.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not buy a 17 mm scope expecting to inspect the main lateral with it. You will get a dim picture and no way to locate a fault. Do not pull hard when a 17 mm head snags on a galvanized lip either; the thin rod can kink. Back off, rotate, and try again. And check the current listing before assuming a specific head size: some brands sell 17 mm and 23 mm versions under near-identical titles. Our guide on reading a sewer camera listing shows what to look for.

Which 17 mm system for which job

Under a bathroom vanity with a slip-joint trap you can remove, the VEVOR WP9602B is all you need: pull the trap, enter the trap arm, push to the stack. For a kitchen line that runs the length of the house before it drops, or a laundry standpipe across a basement, the extra cable on the Sanyipace S8417D is what gets you to the tee, and the microphone lets you note distances by voice since there is no counter. For a tub or shower trap under a finished floor, where you are lying on tile with the reel beside you, the S5517DC’s detachable magnetic screen is the feature that makes the job tolerable. In a 3 or 4 in floor drain line the S5517DC’s published 4.0 in upper range and slightly larger head also give it the edge in light. None of the three is the right tool for the main lateral; for that, add a 23 mm reel later and keep the small scope for what it does well.

Setting up for a small-line push

Run water through the fixture first so the trap and the line are wet. Set the LEDs to the middle setting, not full, because a small pipe wall this close to the lens washes out. Feed the rod by hand from a foot behind the head rather than from the reel, so you can feel a snag before the rod bows. And mark the rod with tape at the entry every ten feet if the system has no counter, so the recording has a distance reference you can quote later.

Common questions

Will a 17 mm head go through a P-trap?

Usually, on a 5 mm rod. None of these three manufacturers publishes a bend radius, so it is not guaranteed on paper.

Do 17 mm cameras have a sonde?

None of the three here states one. For locating in a small line, the RIDGID microDRAIN reel is the verified option, at a professional price.

Is 18 mm meaningfully bigger than 17 mm?

No. In any line these scopes are meant for, the difference is not measurable.

Final Verdict

For most buyers, Sanyipace 100 ft Compact Sewer Camera (17 mm Head, 4.3 in Screen) is the best choice in this guide (Best Overall).

A compact 17 mm (0.67 in) camera head on a 100 ft (4.8 mm) push cable with a 4.3-inch LCD monitor and microphone audio recording for narrow residential pipe inspections.

Choose instead for technicians inspecting residential branch lines, sinks, floor drains, and cleanouts where 23mm heads are oversizedSanyipace S5517DC 66 ft Compact Drain Camera (18 mm Head, 5 in Screen)

No single sewer camera suits every job. The right choice depends mainly on the smallest pipe diameter you inspect, the run length you need to reach, and whether you need to locate faults from the surface.
