A P-trap is a U-bend with an inside radius of an inch or so, and it sits at the start of every fixture drain in the house. It is also the single most common place a drain camera gets stuck. The head has to be small enough to enter the trap arm, short enough not to jam at the bottom of the U, and the rod behind it has to bend to a radius that most fiberglass pushrods simply will not follow. Very few cameras are built for it, and only one verified system on this site is rated for it by its manufacturer.
This ranking is honest about that. It puts the one rated system first and then lists the three consumer scopes that usually manage a trap, with the caveat that their makers do not publish a bend radius. Figures are taken from manufacturer listings and compared editorially; no hands-on testing is claimed.

2Best Consumer Scope
#2. VEVOR WP9602B 66 ft Compact Pipe Inspection Camera (Best Consumer Scope)
- 17 mm head on 5 mm cable
- Light and quick to deploy

Why we picked it
Buy this when access is the problem rather than distance, a small head on a thin, semi-rigid cable. 17 mm head on a 5 mm soft rod, cheapest. A deliberate specialist. Owning this alongside a longer reel covers far more situations than owning two similar reels.

Why traps beat cameras
Three dimensions matter. Head diameter has to clear the bore, and a 1.5 in trap has an inside diameter near 1.4 in. Head length has to fit the curve at the bottom of the U, which is why a short head passes where a long one jams even at the same diameter. And the rod’s minimum bend radius has to be smaller than the trap’s centreline radius. A 7 mm fiberglass rod typically will not bend that tight; a 5 mm rod often will; RIDGID’s high-flex microDRAIN cable publishes 0.75 in. Read what minimum bend radius means and can a sewer camera go through a toilet P-trap, which covers the larger closet-bend case.
There is also a practical point. Most fixture traps can be removed in two minutes with a bucket underneath. If the trap is a slip-joint under a sink, take it off and enter the trap arm directly. The camera question only really applies to traps you cannot remove: tub and shower traps under the floor, floor drain traps in a slab, and traps behind finished walls.
What to look for
A published trap or bend rating. Only the RIDGID microDRAIN APX has one among verified systems: 1.25 in lines, multiple 90 degree bends in 1.5 in drains, 0.75 in bend radius.
A head at or under 18 mm on a rod at or under 5 mm. The three consumer scopes here meet this and usually pass a 1.5 in trap, but it is not guaranteed on paper.
A short head. Head length is rarely published. The RIDGID microDRAIN head is designed short for this reason.
Water in the trap. Not a feature, but it matters: a wet trap lets the head slide.
How the ranking was decided
The RIDGID microDRAIN APX wins because it is the only verified system whose manufacturer explicitly rates it for P-traps and tight 1.5 in bends, with a published bend radius to back it up. It carries a 512 Hz sonde so a fault past the trap can be located, an HDR sensor, and a lifetime warranty. It is a reel only, needs a SeeSnake CSx monitor or micro CA-350, and costs many times the consumer scopes. For a plumber who cameras traps weekly, that is the right investment.
The VEVOR WP9602B is the best consumer scope for traps: a 17 mm head on a 5 mm rod the manufacturer describes as semi-rigid and this site rates as soft, with published figures from 1.18 in straight and roughly 2 in at a right angle. It usually makes a 1.5 in trap. The Sanyipace S8417D has the same head size on a 4.8 mm rod with 100 ft of cable, and its listing describes S-trap and P-trap use, though no bend radius is published. The Sanyipace S5517DC is an 18 mm head on a 5 mm rod with a detachable screen, which is useful when the trap is under a tub and you are lying on the floor.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not try a 23 mm head in a fixture trap. Do not push a dry trap. Do not pull a stuck head straight back; rotate the reel a quarter turn and back it out slowly, because a head twisted in a trap wedges harder when pulled. And remove the trap if you can. A camera through a removed slip-joint trap is a camera down a straight trap arm, which any small scope will manage. See how to retrieve a stuck sewer camera before you need it.
Traps you can remove and traps you cannot
Most sink traps are slip-joint and come off with a bucket underneath, which turns the job into a straight push down the trap arm that any small scope handles. Tub and shower traps under the floor, floor drain traps in a slab, and traps behind finished walls are the ones that stay. For those, the RIDGID microDRAIN is the rated tool, and the consumer scopes are the affordable attempt. Toilet traps are a separate case: pull the toilet and enter the flange, because even a rated head is better used past the closet bend than through it. Our guide on how to use a sewer camera covers each entry point.
Getting a small head through a trap
Fill the trap with water first. Enter with the LEDs at half power so the wet wall does not glare. Feed by hand from just behind the head and let the rod find the curve rather than pushing it round. When the head reaches the bottom of the U it will resist for a moment; a slow, steady push with a slight rotation usually takes it through. If it stops hard, back out, rotate the reel a quarter turn, and try again rather than forcing.
Common questions
Can a sewer camera go through a P-trap?
The RIDGID microDRAIN APX is rated for it. The 17 and 18 mm consumer scopes usually can; their makers do not guarantee it.
What about a toilet trap?
A closet bend is larger but still tight. Pull the toilet and enter the flange instead.
Why not a borescope?
A 5 ft articulating borescope will look into a trap but cannot inspect the line beyond it. See sewer camera vs borescope.

Final Verdict
For most buyers, RIDGID 70023 SeeSnake microDRAIN APX Camera Reel (65 ft, 22 mm Head, TruSense) is the best choice in this guide (Best Overall).
A specialized 65 ft ultra-compact diagnostic push reel engineered with high-flex cable to navigate tight 1.25-inch lines, P-traps, and toilet bends, featuring TruSense HDR imaging and an integrated 512 Hz sonde. Requires a compatible SeeSnake CSx monitor or micro CA-350.
No single sewer camera suits every job. The right choice depends mainly on the smallest pipe diameter you inspect, the run length you need to reach, and whether you need to locate faults from the surface.
